Butterbeer Sauce


I have been a big fan of the Harry Potter series ever since it was introduced to me when I was in high school.  A girl I babysat for was reading the books and lent me them.  I devoured the books and couldn’t get enough.  At that point only 3 of the books were out and we had to wait for the rest to slowly be released.  Then the movies started to come out, which was great as well.  I later introduced the books to my husband who wasn’t much of a reader.  He had seen the movies but decided to borrow my books and got as into to them as I was.
I love how years later Harry Potter is just as popular as it was when it was first introduced and I like how I can introduce the great series to my kids as well.  I recently started reading the books to my oldest son.  He loves them and it is now part of our routine to read a little bit every night.  We went to the Harry Potter Festival outside of Philadelphia a few weeks ago.  Unfortunately it was too busy to really do anything but my son had a great time and loved seeing all the people that like the books too.
With the upcoming new movie coming out that is based in the same magical world, I thought it would be great to make some food that reminded me of the book.  The food that I have always wanted to try was butterbeer and I was able to try some of that a few weeks ago.  Butterbeer is really a butterscotch flavored drink.  I decided to make a butterscotch sauce or topping and thought it would be great for a Harry Potter themed party or for anytime.
This Butterbeer Sauce is a delicious topping that is packed full of butterscotch flavor.  It is easy to make and would be great used on top of ice cream, cakes, pies, cheesecakes, and any other desserts.  I even used it to make a pumpkin pie.  This is great for any Harry Potter lover or for anyone that likes butterscotch flavor.  Also there is no beer in this so it is great for your kids to eat as well!  I hope that you try this delicious topping!


Butterbeer Sauce


  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon -1 teaspoon salt


  1. Melt the butter in a medium sized sauce pan over medium heat.  Add the sugar and cream and whisk until well blended.  Bring the sauce to a gentle boil and cook for about 5 minutes, whisking occasionally.
  2. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla and the salt.
  3. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.  The sauce will thicken as it cools down.  You can reheat it in the microwave to thin it out.
  4. Serve hot or cold and use as a topping over ice cream or any other dessert.
