Red Velvet Oreo Cake Roll

I decided that I would make a cake roll for my husband for Valentine’s Day.  I had never made one before and I thought it would be hard, but it is really not.  I decided that a red velvet cake roll would be perfect for Valentine’s Day.  I filled the cake roll with cookies and cream frosting and topped it with chocolate ganache and Oreos.  This is a decadent and delicious dessert that would be a great way to celebrate.
This Red Velvet Oreo Cake Roll is the perfect way to celebrate Valentine’s Day and is a delicious and easy dessert.  I thought that a cake roll would be hard to make, but it really wasn’t.  I used a boxed red velvet cake mix and baked it on a large cookie sheet.  While it was warm I used a dish towel to roll it up and allowed it to cool that way.  I then used a premade frosting with added Oreo cookies to make a cookies and cream frosting.  I rolled the cake roll back up and topped it with chocolate ganache and crushed Oreos.
I am making this cake roll for my husband for Valentine’s Day and I also made it to bring to a family gathering.  My family loved it and some of them even said it was the best cake they ever had.  I think that is quite a compliment and means this cake is a must try.  I really like the red velvet cake with the cookies and cream frosting and it tastes great topped with the ganache and Oreos.  This is an easy and delicious cake roll that is a must try.





  • 1 3/4 cup red velvet cake mix
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/4 cup water
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 container cream cheese frosting
  • 2/3 cup crushed Oreos (about 10 Oreos)
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
Mix the red velvet cake mix, eggs, water, and vegetable oil until combined.  Pour the cake mix into a greased jelly roll pan or large cookie sheet that is lined with foil.  Evenly spread the cake batter on the pan.
Bake for 10-15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.  
Set out a clean kitchen towel on a counter.  Sprinkle the powdered sugar on top of the kitchen towel.  As soon as the cake comes out of the oven carefully turn it over onto the kitchen towel and remove the foil.  
Starting at the short end of the cake, roll the edge of the towel over the cake.  Tightly roll the cake up into the towel.  Let the cake cool completely while it is rolled. 
Once the cake is cooled, unroll the cake.  
Meanwhile, combine 1/3 cup crushed Oreos into the container of cream cheese frosting.  Spread the frosting on top of the unrolled cake roll.  Roll the cake back up. 
For the ganache, place the semi sweet chocolate chips into a medium sized bowl. In a small saucepan, pour the cream in and bring it to a boil. As soon as the cream boils up to the top of the pan, quickly remove it from the heat and pour it over the chocolate chips, whisking to mix together until the chocolate is melted.
Pour the ganache on top of the cake roll.  Sprinkle the remaining crushed Oreos on top of the ganache.  Refrigerate until ready to serve.
