Chocolate Cinnamon Monkey Bread

I have seen recipes for Monkey Bread all over Pinterest and thought that it looked delicious.  With my new bundt pan I decided to make my own version of monkey bread.  When I saw that Ashton from Something Swanky made Monkey Bread using refrigerated cinnamon buns, I knew that I had to try it. Her version looks so delicious.
I always like making things with refrigerated cinnamon buns, like the Caramel Cinnamon French Toast Bake that I posted earlier this week.  I can never get enough chocolate so I decided to make chocolate flavored Monkey Bread.
This Chocolate Cinnamon Monkey Bread uses refrigerated cinnamon buns and add three different types of chocolate.  You could even say it is Triple Chocolate Monkey Bread.  The cinnamon buns are dunked in a mixture of chocolate pudding and sugar and then chocolate chips are added on top.  I decided to use the icing from the cinnamon buns and I added cocoa powder to the icing to make it chocolate flavored.
This monkey bread was so delicious, this makes a great dessert or it would be great for breakfast too.  I loved the combination of the chocolate and cinnamon flavor along with the use of the cinnamon buns.  Plus this is easy to make.  This would be a great breakfast or dessert for Mother’s Day.  I know I would love if my family made this for me (hint, hint!).  I hope you enjoy this great monkey bread!

Chocolate Cinnamon Monkey Bread

Chocolate Cinnamon Monkey Bread

  • 3 cans Pillsbury refrigerated cinnamon rolls with icing
  • 1 box (3.9 ounces) instant chocolate pudding, dry
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons mini chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon cocoa powder

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Combine the chocolate pudding, sugar, and cinnamon in a large zip bag and shake to combine.
  3. Separate each can into 8 cinnamon rolls and cut each cinnamon roll in half and roll each half into a ball. Place half of the balls into the zip lock bag and shake to coat with the chocolate pudding mixture.
  4. Place the coated cinnamon rolls into a greased bundt pan. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of the mini chocolate chips over the coated cinnamon rolls.
  5. Then place the remaining cinnamon roll balls into the plastic bag and shake to coat. Place the remaining coated cinnamon rolls on top of the first layer of cinnamon rolls in the bundt pan. Sprinkle the remaining tablespoon of chocolate chips on top of the second layer of coated cinnamon rolls.
  6. In a small bowl add the brown sugar and butter and microwave for one minute. Stir until the sugar is dissolved. Pour the butter mixture on top of the coated cinnamon rolls in the bundt pan.
  7. Bake the monkey bread for 20-25 minutes or until the top is golden brown. Cool for five minutes then invert the monkey bread onto a plate. Add the cocoa powder into one container of the cinnamon roll icing and stir to combine. Drizzle the icing over the monkey bread.
